It sounds like the sayings in the letters is what your memoir is really about. It doesn’t sound to me like you need a “plot” or a “hook.” To start, write down all the sayings you want to include. Don’t worry about whether they are related. Review what you’ve written. Consider each saying as a section or segment. How many different sections or segments, if any, do you have? Can any of the sayings be grouped together because they have a theme in common? (For example: everyday life in the Navy, love, what matters in life, etc.) Label any sections or segments you have. If the labels will make sense to your readers, you may want to use them.

The next step is to add an introduction to your memoir. An introduction is a sentence at the beginning which lets your readers know that your memoir is loosely structured, for example: “These are the sayings my husband wrote to me about in letters while he was in the Navy.” If you have sections or segments (whether labeled or not), write a transition sentence at the beginning of each segment or section. A transition sentence gives the reader a heads-up that you are using a loose structure and gives coherence to your memoir. A transition sentence could be: “Oh, and another thing” or “Another time,” “There is also,” or “He also said” or “Nothing else meant more to me than…”

Alternatively, you could also put the sayings into a bulleted list. In this case, your introduction or transition sentence for the bulleted list could be something like, “Here are several of my favorite sayings:”

Finally, read through your memoir. Check whether your introductions and transitions add the right amount of coherence to what you’ve written. Will your audience be able to see that your memoir combines items which are loosely organized? Bear in mind that someone reading this in the future may not know you, or anything about you.

Let me know how things turn out. You’ve hit on a common problem and I’d love to share the solution with my readers.

Am trying to write story with 2 yrs. savings of "love letters" my husband and I wrote each other until he got out of the Navy: meeting; dating' wedding' him on Navy cruises, pregnancy and discharge. Where do I start? Need a "Hook". Some letters are " corny" since we were very young. This was 59 yrs. ago and still going strong. What would be my plot? Completely baffled. Thanks for your help Toni3133@yahoo.com Annette Pelletier

Yes, Mary Jewett Telford was a published author. She wrote juvenile stories for magazines. I've come across a story called "Tom," illustrated by J.E. Kelly, which was published in "St. Nicholas, An Illstrated Magazine for Young Folks," published in 1880. But I don't know about any books. I found "Tom" on Google Books. You ask if "your" Mary Jewett Telford is the same person as my great, great, great aunt. It sounds like it is.

I was wondering if your great, great, great aunt Mary Jewett Telford was a published author. I have an old, old book entitled "What Johnny Found" by Lou Burney and Mary Jewett Telford - it does not have a publishing date but an inscription to a person dated: 1878...this little book was published by D. Lothrup & Co. in Boston.

Thank you - I've had this book for many years from my grandmother and happened upon your website tonite..... Is this a relative????
